Fred Haise

Apollo 13 Astronaut - Lunar Module Pilot

Fred Haise

Fred Haise was the Lunar Module pilot for the Apollo 13 mission, which was launched on April 11, 1970. The mission was aborted after an oxygen tank exploded in the service module of their spacecraft en route to the Moon. Haise and his crew mates James Lovell and John Swigert had to return to Earth without landing on the Moon, but they were able to make it home safely after a harrowing journey through space. After completing his harrowing flight around the moon, Fred continued working for NASA as a test pilot and was responsible for flying Enterprise—the first space shuttle prototype.

The photographs in this album were taken during a signing at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City.

It was a great honor to meet someone whom I've admired my whole life—a man who flew around the moon.
